Bunny Essentials Guide

Food & Diet

Timothy Hay (80% of diet): Unlimited fresh hay is critical for gut health and wearing down teeth. Hay bags are my preference to minimize mess and keep bunnies from soiling it.

Pellets (20% of diet): Feed babies unlimited pellets until 6 months old, then 1/4 - 1/2 cup daily. Avoid mixes with colourful bits and transition foods gradually over 7-10 days to avoid digestive upset.

Water: Bunnies drink lots of water — a heavy bowl is recommended to prevent tipping. All of our buns are used to drinking from a bowl already.

Housing & Enclosure

Enclosure: Bunnies are happiest with room to hop and stretch, not just a small cage. I recommend a minimum 4ft x 2ft enclosure as a home base, or free-range in a bunny-proofed area being ideal. My favourite enclosure is from Amazon — it has clear plastic panels, doors for easy access, is adjustable, and easy to clean. I love it for babies because you can keep their space smaller while litter training, then add panels as they grow.

Litter Box: Bunnies naturally eat and eliminate at the same time, so placing hay & pellets in the litter box encourages proper use. Choose a box with a grate, and place litter filler underneath (I prefer chopped straw) to absorb urine and control odour. The grate keeps your bunny clean and out of soiled litter.

Hideout: Bunnies need a safe, cozy place to retreat and relax. A hideout helps reduce stress and supports natural behaviours like resting and nesting. Look for one that’s sturdy, has two exits and large enough for your bunny to fully stretch out inside.

Enrichment & Toys

Toys, tunnels, chew items, and foraging mats help prevent boredom and support natural behaviours. There are lots of great DIY ideas online but if you’re looking for ready-to-use options here are some of my favourites.

Grooming Tools

Grooming brush: Bunnies need brushing weekly (sometime more when moulting). I recommend a brush that quickly removes hair and is easy to clean.

Nail Trimmers: Monthly nail trims help keep bunnies feet and posture healthy. I recommend using a piece of gauze to push fur back and expose the nails for quick and easy trimming.

Travel

Vet visits, grooming appointments, or bringing your bunny home for the first time. Having a small travel kit ready makes every trip safer and far less stressful for your rabbit. We recommend keeping a secure top loading carrier and a cozy blanket on hand so your bunny can travel comfortably and calmly wherever they need to go.

Emergency Basics

It’s smart to have a few emergency items on hand in case of digestive issues or nail bleeds — but these don’t replace veterinary care.

Bunny Proofing

Rabbits love to explore and chew, so cover cords, remove toxic plants, block small spaces, and consider an air purifier to help reduce hay dust and dander. A bunny-proofed home keeps your rabbit safe and your space protected.
